Eleanor Herbosch (1999) is a British born, Belgian multidisciplinary artist who manipulates a variety of materials to create textural works of art. In 2019, whilst still studying at London’s Central Saint Martins, she founded her practice in a small studio in the back of her garden in Antwerp, Belgium, where she still resides and works.
Her adopted means of expression are ceramics and painting which are united by a common denominator: earth, her material of choice.
Eleanor’s work is characterised by expressing the potential of natural materials with the intent of enhancing their intrinsic qualities.
In my paintings, I utilised the excavated clay, excess construction bricks and roof tiles obtained during the demolition process. Using the clay’s natural pigments, unique to the site, I was able to create a textural foundation directly into the canvas. I ground down the remaining materials into various compositions to be able to create the reliefs.
Over time, my practice has evolved towards creating site-specific works of art. The philosophy of Golden Earth
Studios has aligned seamlessly with this approach.
I take great pleasure in creating work that holds a special meaning or establishes a profound connection with my clients as it creates a much more collaborative and engaging dialogue. I work alone in my studio but this way I am able to share ideas prior to the making which I do enjoy.
The most important outcome when working on these paintings was to preserve the essence of the location.
The background’s unique pigmentation is a direct representation of the qualities of materials excavated from
the site.
Working with materials as solid as brick and stone was a new exercise for me, both physically and
metaphorically!
Despite not being accustomed to working with these new materials, I have been able to expand
my materials library, gaining a broader understanding of their potential in my artistic expression.
