Lucia Ocejo
Lucia Ocejo is a Mexican potter based in London. Her interest in pottery as a record of human activity was sparked when she handled a Han Dynasty bowl at the V&A and discovered the fingerprint of the potter preserved on its rim, two thousand years later. After studying Fine Arts in the United States, she developed her practice through working with potters internationally, including Steve Sheridan in Australia and Lisa Hammond MBE in London. She currently fires all her work in a self-built gas kiln in Oxfordshire.
Ocejo’s practice explores how ceramics can become a geological record of place. For the body of work for Golden Earth Studio, the foraged construction clay creates a unique colour, exploring how its mineral composition is revealed through fire. The firing process draws out latent greens, blues and other hues, each shaped by the minerals held within the clay and revealing qualities that are otherwise hidden in its raw state. Colour becomes a way of reading the earth: each variation is a material expression of place, geology and the elemental forces that have shaped it.
