James Galbraith Kirkpatrick portrait

James Galbraith Kirkpatrick

James Galbraith Kirkpatrick is a ceramic artist based in Kent whose work explores repetition, absence and the spatial behaviour of vessels. Predominantly wheel-thrown, pieces are developed as individual objects yet conceived as part of larger compositions. Arranged in lines, clusters or fields, the works investigate how meaning shifts through proximity, distance and omission.

Kirkpatrick transforms clay excavated from London construction sites into a collection of wheel-thrown tableware, using the clay alongside waste wood-ash to create mineral-rich glazes. Earth has long been used to build the spaces we inhabit, from early earthen structures to the bricks of the modern city. Drawing on years spent working as both a ceramicist and plasterer, Kirkpatrick redirects this displaced material from construction site to table, exploring its potential through objects made for everyday use.
